Background of the study
Social media has become a primary platform for cultural expression, where Nigerian Pidgin serves as an accessible medium for communication among diverse audiences. Multimodal communication strategies—combining text, visuals, and audio elements—are increasingly employed to enhance message delivery on digital platforms. This investigation explores how translators use multimodal techniques to convey content from source languages into Nigerian Pidgin, particularly for social media content such as memes, videos, and interactive posts (Adamu, 2023). These strategies involve not only linguistic translation but also the adaptation of cultural symbols, emojis, and visual metaphors to resonate with online communities (Ibrahim, 2024). The study analyzes various social media posts and digital campaigns, highlighting successful examples where multimodal approaches have increased audience engagement and message clarity. By examining both the linguistic and non-linguistic elements of translation, the research aims to identify best practices and challenges associated with the multimodal rendition of content in Nigerian Pidgin. This approach is critical in an era where digital communication continuously evolves and where preserving cultural nuance while achieving broad accessibility is essential.
Statement of the problem
Despite the innovative use of multimodal strategies, translating content into Nigerian Pidgin for social media is fraught with challenges. Translators often struggle with balancing textual meaning with appropriate visual and auditory elements, leading to messages that may lose cultural nuance or appear disjointed (Adamu, 2023). Additionally, the rapid pace of social media communication necessitates concise yet engaging translations, which can result in oversimplification or misinterpretation of the original message (Ibrahim, 2024). This study seeks to identify these multimodal challenges and provide recommendations to ensure that Nigerian Pidgin translations on social media are both culturally resonant and contextually accurate.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of language and digital media through multimodal translation in Nigerian Pidgin. The insights will benefit social media content creators, translators, and communication strategists by identifying effective practices and potential pitfalls. Improved multimodal strategies will enhance message clarity and cultural authenticity, fostering more inclusive digital communication (Adamu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining multimodal translation strategies in Nigerian Pidgin for social media. It does not extend to traditional media or other languages.
